She turned to him as he lay beside her in the near darkness. His features were little more than blurred outlines but she could tell he was still awake, watching her.
"How?" she asked.
"Oh, I think you know."
Even after all this time, she struggled to believe what he had told her about the Bad Wolf.
"How could I —" A hand brushing her cheek interrupted her question.
"'I take the words, I scatter them through time and space. A message to lead myself here.'"
"Yeah, so I've heard."
"It was always about — "
"Us," she finished.
"Being together," he murmured, nodding. "I suppose I'd always just assumed.... I mean both times – it was 'the end of the world' and all that."
"But it's always 'the end of the world' with us."
His head dropped, a small laugh escaping him.
"Yeah."
"And here you are."
"Here we are..."
"Together." She curled her fingers around his hand.
His eyes lifted to meet hers.
"For ever."
